My trainer, , has asked me to keep a food diary for a week (probably to pressure me into eating my daily kilo of meat). I will post it next week, with Sarah’s no-doubt brutal comments.

Being a methodical sort of chap, I kept a food diary before starting this programme. Admittedly, it was December and party season, but it’s still pretty scary. In fact, I feel slightly queasy just looking at it from my current sober, holier-than-thou vantage point.

Yup, reading what other people eat is dull. Skip straight to the end for the key figure.


A mixed nosebag

Friday 16 Dec
Breakfast:2 slices granary toast, spread Marmite
Lunch:homemade chilli con carne, mashed potato
Dinner:1/3 Domino’s meat feast pizza, 2 chicken wings
Drink:3 cups tea with 1 sugar each. 1 cup coffee. 3 x 330ml Stella. 2/3 bottle red wine (15 units; 956 calories)

Saturday 17 Dec
Breakfast:greasy spoon – egg, bacon, black pudding, bubble, beans
Lunch:pork loin, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli
Dinner:Häagan-Dazs Cookies & Cream ice cream
Drink:2 cups tea with 1 sugar each. 1 cup coffee. 3 gins and tonics (6 units; 500 calories)

Sunday 18 Dec
Breakfast:2 slices granary toast, spread, Marmite
Lunch:pasta, pesto, brocolli
Dinner:2 pieces dirty chicken, 4 hot wings, chips
Drink:2 cups tea with 1 sugar each, 2 bottles red wine (19.5 units; 1,020 calories)

Monday 19 Dec
Breakfast:beans on granary toast, fried egg, grated cheese
Lunch:chicken and spicy sausage wrap
Dinner:pasta, mackerel, brocolli
Drink:3 cups tea with 1 sugar. 1 Pret latte. 1 can Pepsi

Tuesday 20 Dec
Breakfast:cheese & Marmite sandwich on granary
Lunch:homemade chilli con carne, Basmati rice, sweetcorn
Dinner:homemade macaroni cheese, broccoli
Drink:3 x tea with 1 sugar. 1 coffee. 1 gin &tonic(2units; 167 calories)

Wednesday 21 Dec
Breakfast:nothing
Lunch:reheated macaroni cheese
Dinner:Iskender kebab (mixed meats, tomato, yoghurt), Turkish bread
Drink:1 tea with 1 sugar. 1 coffee. 7 pints bitter. 1 glass red wine (18 units; 1,471 calories)

Thursday 22 Dec
Breakfast:baked beans on wheatgerm toast, 2 fried eggs, grated cheese
Lunch:pasta, pesto & brocolli
Dinner:homemade lamb curry, Basmati rice, half a naan
Drink:1 can Diet Coke. 2 pints bitter (5.1 units; 466 calories)

Goodbye to all that

The sobering stat is the alcohol intake. The 65.6 units of alcohol I remember drinking is twice the Government recommended weekly intake for men (21-28 units), and is concentrated on three nights of binging.

I’ve always been sceptical about Government alcohol guidelines; but what strikes me (in the midriff) are the calories. In seven days I took in at least 4,580 calories from alcohol. Recommended daily calorie intake for men is 2,500. I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure calories from alcohol aren’t good calories. My gut’s inexorable advance is partly explained.
