How Your iPhone Can Help Combat Postpartum Depression
Yep, you read that right—the key to putting an end to postpartum depression and anxiety might be sitting in your purse (or in your hand) right now.
Thanks to a recent collaboration between Apple, The National Institute of Mental Health, Postpartum Progress, and UNC Chapel Hill, moms will soon be able to get help for their symptoms via the new iPhone app PPD Act. Essentially, the free app encourages current postpartum patients to be part of a growing research project that aims to understand how to prevent new moms from developing any kind of pregnancy-related anxiety or depression.
Using the app is simple: After it's downloaded, you're prompted to answer a list of questions that are designed to evaluate your symptoms. Based on the answers, it will then provide personalized diagnosis information along with treatment suggestions.
Usually, finding volunteers for studies like these can take months (or even years), but with Apple's involvement, the creators say thousands of women are excited about getting involved now that they have easy access to the study on their iPhones.
"A decade ago, everyone was suffering in silence. Now, thanks to social media, we're talking about it. Women are sharing their stories," Katherine Stone of the Postpartum Progress organization told . "With this app, we have an opportunity for collective action as patients who have been there.
