17-Year-Old Found Dead in a Drain After Taking Synthetic Cannabis
Dean Shield, a 17-year-old from Hunter, Australia, was found in a reservation drain on Saturday night and was later pronounced dead, NBN News reports. He and two 22-year-old men had been taking synthetic cannabis before Shield was discovered.
"He was a good kid with a heart of gold and a contagious laugh," his sister Kala Gynn told NBN. "He lived every day with a smile or laugh, and life isn't going to be the same without his cheeky presence."
According to Stuff.co.nz, detectives are trying to find the source of the drug but no one has been able to confirm the cause of death — though police have stated there was chronic in Shield's system, official results of Shield's autopsy are still pending.
Superintendent Craig Jackson told News.co.au he believes there is more of the potentially deadly batch of the drug out there: "There's no quality control in relation to it; you simply don't know what you're getting. You really are taking your life in your hands by using it."
The two other men who were hospitalized are reportedly in serious but stable condition.
